EXPANDING MANDRELS
AND CHUCKS
These High precision self
contained Hydraulic expanding MANDRELS/CHUKS work on the principle of PASCALS law
(ie)., A confined fluid transmits externally applied pressure uniformly in all directions.
Thus when the hydraulic
medium is placed in a closed chamber of the mandrel/chuck and influenced by external force
the hydrostatic pressure will emerge, which will uniformly act upon all the walls of the
chamber.
In Mandrels and Chucks of
this type the work locating surface is itself the clamping surface, which ensures high
accuracy of location and reduces the handling time, thus increasing productivity.

When socket grub screw 1
is tightened, piston 2 gets displaced compressing Hydraulic medium , 3.
Now the Hydraulic medium 3 get pressurized and this pressure is transmitted to spring
steel sleeve , 4 (component locating surface) forcing the spring steel sleeve
to expand and clamp the work piece , 5 Now this whole unit can be mounted
on the machine tool for machining to be performed on the work piece.
These fixtures can be very
effectively employed where large quantities of parts such as automobile components, ball
bearing races, ground gears etc. are to be produced with high precision and repeated
accuracy with minimum loading time. Once set these fixtures do not require any further
setting for a very long period.
